Club saved by Herald appeal
A GROUP which celebrates the history and tradition of Sussex has been saved after a Herald appeal attracted a host of new committee members.
The Eastbourne Association of Sussex Folk was formed back in 1958 and at its height attracted more than 300 members to its regular meetings and talks.
However, with a lack of new blood coming through the ranks, the club announced it would close two years shy of its diamond anniversary.
A last-ditch attempt to recruit new volunteers was issued in the Herald last month and, much to the relief of its 62 members, enough people came forward to keep the club going for at least another year.
Pat Siggs, one of those who asked the Herald for help, said this week that the committee was absolutely delighted.
She said, “I am pleased to say it is going to carry on. We had some people come forward and have a new look committee so the club should be OK for the next 12 months.
“Ideally we would love to make it to our 60th anniversary because that would be a great milestone.”
In recognition of her work over the years, Mrs Siggs has been made vice president, while her husband, outgoing chairman David Siggs, has been named president.
Denise Morgan-Smith will take over as chairman of the club, while Jill Haughan is the new secretary.
The next meeting is pencilled in for September 17 and anyone who is interested in heading along should call 737073.
Membership of the group is restricted to anyone who was born in Sussex or has lived in the area for a long time, but guests are welcome to attend any talk or session.
