AIRSHOW fans can look forward to the return of the RAF Chinook helicopter at this year’s Airbourne (August 9-12).

The tandem rotor heavy lift helicopter is back at to Airbourne after a four-year gap – one of several star attractions returning to celebrate the 20-year anniversary of the free airshow.

Eastbourne Borough Council Cabinet Member for Tourism, Cllr Neil Stanley said, “This is fantastic news, we are delighted to welcome back the awesome Chinook.”

Chinooks are heavily used by both the RAF and US Army and are large enough to house two Landrovers inside the aircraft. The aircraft will land equipment on the beach as part of its display, giving onlookers a great view of the aircraft in action.

The Chinook HC2 joins an RAF line up which includes the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, Hawk, Tucano, Tutor, King Air and Tornado GR4.The RAF Sea King and an Army Air Corps Lynx helicopter will both also display at the show.

Family favourites the Breitling Wingwalkers are back while, plus former Red Arrows pilots, The Blades, will zoom across the skies at Airbourne over all four days, hot on the heels of their recent world record success.

Also joining the flying line up, will be displays from the Army Tigers Parachute Display Team and The Raiders: Royal Navy Parachute Display Team, who will both be dropping in formation and landing on Eastbourne’s beaches.

Organisers are also seeking sponsorship to bring the Vulcan display to Eastbourne for the first time.

The Cold War jet is currently undergoing engine replacement and is expected to return to the skies mid July. A full line up will be announced shortly, including more 20-year highlights, old favourites, aerobatic teams and a classic jet programme.
