Chance to hear from out of Towner artist at Eastbourne gallery

Eastbourne’s award-winning contemporary art museum is inviting visitors to hear from photographer and video installation artist Willie Doherty on Thursday.

The self-confessed “old-fashioned landscape artist” will speak about what it was like to put his current exhibition Disturbance together, which spans his 30 year career and discussed his most recent work in conversation with Declan Long.

Long has written extensively about Doherty’s work and is MA coordinator for Art in the Contemporary World at Ireland’s National College of Art & Design.

Eastbourne Borough Council Cabinet Member for Tourism and Leisure Cllr Neil Stanley said, “We were very excited to launch Towner’s recent exhibition Disturbance which runs until June 24. The talk will allow visitors to hear from Willie Doherty in person as well as enjoy the huge impact his artwork makes on the viewer.”

Disturbance surveys the artist’s distinguished career from the mid 1980s to today – including Doherty’s most recent work Ancient Ground, shot on the peat bogs of County Donegal.

Doherty’s work begins with the land, exploring its relationship to memory and the multiple meanings a single image may have. His practice is rooted in the politics and landscape of his native Derry and the closeness of its border with the Republic of Ireland. However, as Disturbance reveals, his work transcends the specifics of any particular environment to have a universal appeal.

The talk begins at 7pm on May 10. Tickets are available through Towner’s website, at £8 or £6 concessions.

Towner is open Tuesday to Sunday and Bank Holidays from 10am till 6pm.
