A club which celebrated its centenary was visited by Eastbourne MP Stephen Lloyd as members marked the occasion.

Eastbourne Working Men’s Club marked the milestone with a special open day and Mr Lloyd was on hand to unveil a commemorative brass plaque and was in turn presented with a Life Membership of the club.

Both old and new members were invited to join in the fun and enjoy refreshments, including special centenary ale that was produced to tie in with the event. East bourne Working Men’s Club was officially opened on October 7, 1912. During its 100 years it has gone from strength to strength, it has a long history of being well run by a strong committee and having loyal membership.

The club has different sections including darts, jet ski, football and bowls. It also has a charity section and is currently raising money for the Pevensey Ward at Eastbourne DGH.

Committee member Richard Sherlock said, “The centenary celebrations went very well. The event was well attended, including visitors from Knaphill and Blackheath Working Men’s Clubs and Lancing Royal British Legion. The crowd was entertained by a very good band – The Buffaloes – and fed via an excellent buffet prepared by two of our lady members, Jan and Jules.

“MP Stephen Lloyd spent nearly an hour with us and chatted to many of our members.

“He also gave an entertaining speech, including his experience as a parachutist. He praised the club for being a hub for people in the local area, but also extending out to the Willingdon part of his constituency.

“He said that he was impressed by the fact that the club has a healthy number of regular members and is succeeding in these difficult times.”

The club is busy with weekly and monthly activities including a quiz, bingo sessions. raffles, meat draws and ball games – and race nights. See www. eastbourneworkingmensclub.co.uk
