A LOCAL charity has been given a cash boost to help young people with speech difficulties to communicate with staff.

Sussex spina bifida charity SASBAH has received the donation from the Cable&Wireless Worldwide Foundation, which runs a programme to enhance the lives of those with special needs through its communications expertise, and looks to partner and build relationships with institutions that support, research, develop or implement the appropriate, specialist communication requirements.

The money for SASBAH will buy two new iPads for use at the charity’s Bourne Free Youth Club in Eastbourne, set up to create a place for up to 50 young people aged nine-25 with substantial disabilities to come together, and take part in a variety of activities.

Gaynor Medhurst, youth development officer for SASBAH, said, “This donation will have an immediate effect on the young people who use our centre.

“The equipment will enable those with speech and communication difficulties to join in, providing more opportunities for fun and personal development. We appreciate the kindness of the CWW Foundation in supporting our work.”

Tracy O’Brien from the CWW Foundation said, “It is projects like this that bring the vision of the Foundation alive. Enhancing the lives of young people by enabling them to communicate with the rest of the world is what underpins everything the foundation does. We are so pleased to be able to help the team at SASBAH.”

Sasbah has been working for nearly 50 years to support those with spina bifida and/or hydrocephalus to create and develop their best opportunities in life.

It provides a wide range of services, including advice and advocacy, social support, residential breaks, special youth programmes, training and work experience, and many other activities that enable people with these conditions to live full and active lives.
