Carol's inventive approach cuts bills

A COMPETITION winner from Seaford is celebrating after winning another year's worth of free renewable electricity from Green Energy UK.

Carol Worms, came up trumps again, after reducing her electricity consumption over the last 12 months by 25 per cent.

Last year Carol won a year's free renewable electricity with the promise of an extra free year if she could reduce her electricity consumption by 10 per cent.

If the 25 per cent she achieved was replicated across the UK it could save the nation 65million each day of fuel costs.

Carol, who lives with her husband George, claims to have not made any great compromises over the twelve months and says that the secret to their energy saving success is down to a common sense approach.

She said, "You have to be realistic and think about the electricity you are using and be careful with how you use it.

"We still watch TV, and do things as before, our lives have not radically changed, only now we make sure if we don't need something on we switch if off at the plug. What we have done is stop wasting electricity."

Green Energy has signed up to support the 10:10 movement and chief executive and founder, Doug Stewart, believes Carol's impressive efforts could make a massive difference if we all did the same. He said, "We didn't just want to give electricity away without an incentive not to waste it.

"The greenest electricity of all is the stuff we don't actually use! If the rest of the UK could match what Carol has done we would collectively save 65 million each day and could close a significant number of power stations."

Some of Carol's top tips for saving energy include:

• Do microwaves and ovens displaying the time need to be turned on all the time? Carol turned hers off and only switched them on when she needed to use them.

• Plan your cooking. Over the course of the year Carol planned her meals and worked out ways she could cook her food using fewer rings and limiting the oven use.

• Turn everything off at night and when you leave the house. Carol made a point of going round her house and turning off everything that did not need to be on.

• Turn off the lights. Carol already had energy saving light bulbs fitted, but whenever she and George left a room they'd turn the lights.
