Carnival time is back at long last
AFTER an absence of nearly 13 years, Hailsham's carnival is back this Saturday.
It has been revived by the Lark in the Park charity, which helps local children with special needs.
A carnival procession will wind its way through the town from Grovelands School to the Maurice Thornton Playing Field, where the main Lark in the Park event is taking place, between 10am and 5pm.
Among the attractions will be a large funfair, live music, numerous stalls, games and competitions and appearances of the Carnival Queen, Tara Morris, and princesses Kelly Elliott and Jessie Hammond.
A floral arrangement show will also be held at the Hailsham East Community Centre.
A percentage of all funds raised on the day will go to the Lark In The Park Charitable Trust and to a number of other charities taking part.
The hour-long carnival procession starts from Grovelands School at 2pm. It will travel down Grovelands Road, London Road, High Street, Vicarage Road, Marshfoot Lane, St. Mary's Avenue and Greenwich Road, before reaching the Maurice Thornton Playing Field, where Hailsham mayor Ian Haffenden will open proceedings at 3.30pm.
Rolling roadblocks will be in operation while the procession winds its way through the town.
Lark In The Park had been held in Eastbourne for the past six years but after a dispute with Eastbourne Borough Council, the charity switched the event to Hailsham.
Hailsham Town Council's festivities committee, which organises the town's Christmas events and annual Charter Market, gave the green light for a street carnival and Lark in the Park event in the town.
Councillor Nick Ellwood, chairman of the festivities committee, said, "Lark in the Park is an important event in Hailsham's events diary and we want to see families and friends joining in the festivities.
"There will be plenty of things to do for people of all ages and abilities, and it's an ideal fun day out for the whole family.'

n Saturday's festivities close in more relaxed fashion with a concert at St. Mary's Church at 7pm.
This informal evening will feature two local combos headed by Royal Academician Peter Willson, with material ranging from Michael Buble to Irving Berlin and Thelonius Monk.
Local singer Linda Francis, whose voice has been compared in tone to the late Karen Carpenter, is also in the line-up.
Profits will go to Lark in the Park and Friends of St Mary's and tickets, costing 8 for adults with concessions for OAPs and students, are available from Southerden Books and Gallery North in Hailsham.
