PENSIONERS in Eastbourne are getting ready to rock around the clock as a chain of care homes plays host to a string of musical icons.

As part of Bupa’s nationwide Musical Moments week, residents at home in Eastbourne, Polegate and nearby East Dean will be visited tribute acts to some of the singing and performing greats, including Elvis Presley.

The idea behind the campaign, which runs from October 1 until October 7, is to highlight the important therapeutic benefits music can provide to older people.

And among a number of events taking place locally is a 1940s party at The Polegate Nursing Centre on October 2. Residents and staff will be joined by members of the local community from 2pm, with the highlight of the celebration being a performance by singer Neil Judd.

Louise Crowther, home manager, said, “It doesn’t matter if you have a favourite musical legend or just love listening to music, we’re going to get everyone involved in celebrating how powerful music is in lifting spirits, getting minds dancing and toes tapping.”

Bupa has teamed up with the Music in Hospitals (MiH), a charity which provides professionally performed concerts to help improve the lives of those in care, and has been doing for more than 20 years. Its chief executive, Steve Rowland-Jones, said, “The therapeutic benefits of music are well documented, encouraging those who may struggle with memories to recall words and songs, and giving people a sense of self-esteem.”

Elstree Court Nursing Centre in Meads Road has James Owen singing from 2pm on October 4, while East Dean Grange in Lower Street, East Dean, has its party on Monday, October 8 from 3.30pm.
