Car park plan to ease commuting problems in Hampden Park

A new car park on what was once a disused and derelict piece of land has opened in Hampden Park to ease parking problems by commuters in the village.

The land next to Hampden Park Railway Station was given the new lease of life by railway firm Southern in a bid to encourage commuters to park in it as opposed to leaving their cars outside shops all day during the working week.

The car park was officially opened this week by Sandy Sharpe, chair of the Hampden Park Neighbourhood Panel.

Southern project manager Paul Oshisanya said, “What was once an eyesore for residents opposite Hampden Park station has now been transformed into a 25-space car park. The land next to the station was derelict, overgrown and very much out of character with the surrounding residential area.

“Southern, as part of its commitment to increasing car parking spaces across its network, has invested £175,000 to create a much needed facility for those who use the station.

“After extensive consultation with local stakeholders, Southern project managers worked together with the Hampden Park Neighbourhood Panel to turn the vision into a reality. Stage two of the project involves encouraging motorists that park on the street to use the new car park.

“We are delighted with the new car park. It has really turned what was an unattractive piece of wasteground into a superb parking facility for those who use the station.”

Sandy Boyce-Sharpe said, “One of the main objectives of the Neighbourhood Panel is to improve the street scene in Hampden Park and this project has helped greatly by converting an area subject to fly tipping into much needed commuter parking. Many thanks to all concerned.”

Parking at the station costs £3 per day with discounts for longer periods.

Further plans to improve parking in Hampden Park are being looked at in the parking shake up by the county counci
