Campaign launched to ensure return of Vulcan for Airbourne 2011
VULCAN Bomber fans who were disappointed not to see the aircraft at this year's Airbourne are being asked to join a group to help ensure the popular plane takes to the skies next year.
Roger Needham, who recently moved to Seaford but enjoys Airbourne each year and has worked as a marshal at the event in the past, says it was a great shame the Vulcan did not fly.
He is now hoping other like-minded people will get in touch and work together in a bid to raise the 12,000 appearance fee needed.
Eastbourne Borough Council was unable to pay the large amount for this year's airshow and disappointment was expressed by the town's residents, Airbourne visitors and Vulcan to the Sky, the organisation which maintains and runs the recently restored plane.
Roger said, "The Vulcan Bomber really is magnificent.
"I would best describe it as a vampire bat flying through the sky.
"I think it would appeal to the young and old because the young would think it was an impressive plane and the older generations would remember it going to the Falklands."
Roger plans to see how much interest there is in forming a group and then arrange a meeting where people can share their ideas and discuss how they may raise the money needed.
He said, "It depends on numbers, but I think there were a quite a few people like myself who were disappointed the Vulcan was not at Airbourne this year and would like to do something about it in time for next year."
Richard Clarke, a spokesperson for Vulcan to the Sky, said, "I think this is a fantastic idea.
"We would love to come to Eastbourne. We recently had a situation with the Bournemouth airshow where they managed to raise enough funds to have the Vulcan for two days.
"It would be great if Eastbourne could do the same."
