Cameras roll on film remake

EASTBOURNE Pier has been turned back in time this week for filming of the remake of the 1960s classic Brighton Rock.

Olde world amusements and rides have been installed on the Pier for scenes being shot for Brighton Rock, which is being filmed in Eastbourne throughout this week.

Actor Sam Riley was joined by hundreds of extras from Eastbourne on the Pier yesterday morning.

The film also stars Helen Mirren, Andrea Riseborough and John Hurt.

Adapted from Graham Greene's 1939 novel, Brighton Rock charts the headlong fall of Pinkie, a razor-wielding disadvantaged teenager with a religious death wish.

Writer and director Rowan Joffe decided to set the film in 1964 with its famous South Coast quasi-riots between emerging teenage Mods and older Rockers and decided on Eastbourne and neighbouring Brighton as the perfect backdrop.

Already parts of the seafront have been closed to traffic and members of the public and today (Wednesday, October 21) filming is taking place between 6pm to midnight and the Marine and Grand Parade stretches of the seafront outside the Pier will be closed from the end of Terminus Road to the top of Cavendish Place.

Traffic will be diverted via Marine Parade Road in to Seaside Road, Cavendish Place and Pevensey Road. In the other direction traffic will be diverted down Terminus Road and along Susans Road.

Tomorrow filming takes place on the Pier again from 10.30am to 8.30pm and on Friday scenes will be shot on the beach and east of the Pier from 7.30am to 5.30pm. That is believed to include a riot scene on the beach between Mods and Rockers.

There will not be any filming on Saturday but on Sunday the seafront will be closed from 6am to 6pm from the corner of Devonshire Place to the Crown and Anchor Pub.

Hartington Place, Cavendish Place, Elms Road will also be closed and affect all side streets that lead on to the seafront.

On the Sunday there will be between 50 and 100 period Lambrettas travelling down those roads, up Cavendish Place and Elms Avenue.

All the cast and crew are staying locally until the weekend before moving to Brighton. They will then return to Eastbourne at the end of the month to film scenes at Beachy Head and Birling Gap.
