Calls for two dead trees to be felled in Hailsham

A HAILSHAM tree specialist has called for two dead trees to be removed from the town's shopping thoroughfare before they cause injury to passers-by.

The seven-foot withered trees - thought to be whitebeams - have been partially dead for more than five years and stand near the bus stop on the Vicarage Field shopping centre.

But, even though Hailsham Town Council have asked for them to be removed three years ago and many times since, Belfast-based BTWShiells who manage the site have so far neglected to do so and were unavailable for comment when called by the Hailsham Gazette.

The local arboriculturalist, who wished to remain anonymous, said, "It would be nice to see them replaced, as at present they represent a hazard to the safety of shoppers.

"If people, young or old, were to be injured by the sharp dead wood falling from the tree it would be a case of extreme negligence."

The council have also expressed their disquiet.

A council spokesman said, "The council is extremely concerned and upset about the lack of action by the land's managing agents, following numerous requests by the town council and Sussex Police over the past three years or so to remove them.

"The council will continue to pursue the precinct's managing agents until they are removed."
