Busy New Year's Eve for the police
EASTBOURNE police were kept busy as the town saw in the New Year.
Police received a total of 63 calls, 30 of them emergency calls between midnight and 4.30am yesterday as drink got the better of revellers.
Eastbourne District Commander Chief Inspector Dick Coates reported that the majority of the incident were fights between youths in various areas of the town.
By 3am the custody centre at Hammonds Drive, Eastbourne - termed the 'Lock Em Inn Hotel' for the festive period - was full.
The kitchen shop at 353 Seaside suffered a break during the night. A male kicked in the door and ran off, but yesterday morning it was not known what, if anything, had been stolen.
The town was quieter in the run-up to midnight with police being called to just one significant incident. Violence flared at a party in Linden Close, Hampden Park and three people were arrested, one for assault, one for breach of the peace, and one - a woman - for assaulting a police officer.
Chief Inspector Coates paid tribute to officers who were on duty during the night. "They did a great job in attending all the calls and it did stretch our resources at times."
He added that nearly all the incidents were alcohol related.
