Bus fares to rise

FARES on Rider buses are to rise from this Sunday (September 23).

The increase is being implemented by East Sussex County Council. A spokesperson from the local authority was keen to stress that this is the first time they have increased fares on most of these routes in three years.

The council said increases have been kept to a minimum and will depend on the route passengers are travelling.

Due to the number of the fare variations, the council said it was not possible to give details about specific journeys.

However, an example was given for the adult single fare between Eastbourne and Willingdon, which will increase by 10p to £2. The day return will increase by 10p to £3.

East Sussex County Council is advising passengers to contact the bus operator they use to see how their journey will be affected.

Councillor Carl Maynard, lead cabinet member for transport and environment, said, “I appreciate nobody likes price rises but we do need to put fares up now because of the rising costs of fuel.

“We haven’t increased the fares on most of these routes since 2009 and most commercial operators increased their fares last April.

“I would encourage passengers to take advantage of the Explorer bus ticket, which offers great value for money. With the Explorer ticket you can get almost unlimited daily travel on different services and different operators’ buses in the South East.”

On East Sussex County Council-funded Rider routes and Stagecoach buses the Day Explorer ticket costs £6 for an adult – an increase of 20p.

For children travelling after 8.45pm on a weekday, it is £3 for a child – a reduction of 20p.

For a family of up to two adults and three children travelling together the ticket costs £10, which remains unchanged.
