Breaking news: Olympic Torch route for Eastbourne revealed
The London 2012 Olympic Torch will be carried by 8,000 inspirational torchbearers
THE ROUTE that the Olympic torch will take on its visit to Eastbourne has been officially announced.
Locals will get the chance to see the flame close up on Tuesday, July 17, as it is carried through the town on its way from Brighton to Hastings.
The Eastbourne leg is due to get underway in Kings Drive at 3.18pm.
Starting opposite Kings Close, the torch will pass St Thomas A Becket School at 3.22pm before heading along Lewes Road to Upper Avenue.
From there it will be taken over Cavendish Bridge, before runners turn right into Ashford Road and left into Susan’s Road passing close to the Arndale Centre at 3.35pm.
Its route will then turn left into Seaside Road and right into Cavendish Place and onto the seafront passing the Pier at 3.39pm before heading along the seafront, where locals will have one of the best views of the flame.
It is set to go past the Redoubt Fortress at 3.48pm and Fisherman’s Green tennis courts at 4.14pm, continuing past Princes Park three minutes later.
The last part of the route will see the torch travel along Princes Road, where the ample grass verges on either side will provide great opportunities for visitors and residents to come along and watch.
At the end of Princes Road the torch will head along Pevensey Bay Road and will finish at 4.35pm at Monarch Gardens opposite the Crumbles Retail Park.
Organisers of London 2012 promised the torch would pass by within 12 miles of every resident across the UK.
Lord Sebastian Coe, who is one of the key men behind the games, said, “The flame symbolises the Olympic spirit and its journey around the UK will bring the excitement of the games to our streets.
“Now the people know the route the Olympic flame will be carried along they can start planning how they might celebrate and make it Eastbourne’s moment to shine.”
Eastbourne Borough Council’s head of leisure Councillor Neil Stanley said, “We are so excited to be welcoming the torch relay to Eastbourne this summer.
“We really want to encourage residents and visitors from surrounding communities to come along and witness this fantastic spectacle.
“The announcement of the street level route really brings the event to life and I hope that people will be out lining the streets in Eastbourne to offer a fantastic welcome as the flame passes through the town.”
