Breaking news: Eastbourne left on hold as phonelines go down

Businesses and homes across Eastbourne have been left without phones this morning (Wednesday).

Large parts of the town centre reported being unable to make calls, with the problem spreading as far as Hailsham and Herstmonceux.

Locals took to Twitter to see whether they were the only ones suffering from the problem but BT said there was a fault at its local exchange leaving people hearing constantly engaged dialling tones.

The Enterprise Centre near Eastbourne Station was without phones from mid morning – instead asking people to contact them through Twitter or Facebook.

And it was a similar story at the Arndale Centre, with most of Eastbourne turning to social networking sites to stay in touch.

Locals have also reported problems with their O2 network.
