Boy, 4, plucked to safety after sea fall

A four-year-old boy was rescued after falling from a groyne into the sea on Sunday morning.

Emergency services crews were returning home after taking part in the Remembrance Service Parade at Eastbourne when they received the emergency call to Holywell.

They rushed to the scene and the boy was pulled from the sea with a cut head and bruising.

It is believed the youngster, from Newick, had fallen from a sea defence groyne.

The inshore lifeboat was at the scene within minutes to provide medical treatment along with paramedics from the ambulance service.

The little boy was taken to hospital by ambulance and was allowed to return home with his family after treatment.

A spokesperon for the Eastbourne RNLI said, “Fortunately, the combined rescue crews of HM Coastguard, the ambulance service and the RNLI lifeboats were all assembled at the war memorial and were only minutes away when called into service.

“The ILB crew were able to be on scene very quickly to provide emergency care or transportation if necessary.

“In the event, this was not required as the child was taken to Eastbourne DGH by the ambulance service and the remainder of the emergency services were stood down.”

Coastguard David Nott told the Gazette, “The coastguards and lifeboat crews were on their way back from the Rememberance Parade at the war memorial when the emergency call came through just after noon.

“He had a cut to his head but was treated at Eastbourne DGH and will make a fully recovery.”

As in previous years Eastbourne Coastguards, the RNLI and ambulance service laid wreaths at the Remembrance Service at the Flying Angel in Cornfield Road.
