Big Top set to move from regular venue
EASTBOURNE’S annual circus is set to move from Princes Park to Five Acre Field this summer.
Eastbourne Borough Council had made an licensing application to allow fireworks displays, markets, fairground rides, circus, children’s entertainment, exhibitions, drive-in movies and other similar events on the field on Lottbridge Drive.
The council has put a notice up on the gates around the field this week giving residents the chance to comment on the plans.
The field, opposite the Sovereign Centre, is not normally used for events. It is used for sports during the annual Eastbourne Extreme festival but the circus, fun fair and events like the recent Magnificent Motors take place in Princes Park.
However, when the circus comes to town in August this year, the Princes Park site will already be in use with Olympic celebrations.
The council says its licensing application for Five Acre field relates primarily to arrangements being made for circus which will be in town between August 2 and 7.
Cllr Neil Stanley, cabinet member for tourism at Eastbourne Borough Council, said, “The Moscow State Circus is well known to local residents and visitors and one of the foremost highlights of the summer season.
“An international circus has visited Eastbourne for the last 15 years and would normally set up the big tent on the area of Princes Park opposite Fort Fun.
“However, this year the circus coincides with the town’s Olympic celebrations, which include an Olympic Live Site in Princes Park and big screen coverage of London 2012 events.”
Residents in Middleton Drive, whose properties back on to the field, have emailed the Herald to say there is concern in the street.
But Cllr Stanley says that while it is necessary to relocate the circus to large Five Acre Field area, it will be ‘well away from the neighbouring residential properties’.
He added, “This is an area already used for Eastbourne Extreme, with multiple sports activities taking place and is also used for parking during other large events.”

All comments must be sent to the council by June 5.
