Big ‘C’ Walk raises thousands for charity
An Eastbourne resident who has organised a series of charity walks in memory of his late wife is calling on people to put their best foot forward for this year’s fundraiser.
Tony Griffiths and his hard working team once again joined ranks to help boost funds for St Wilfrid’s Hospice and the Royal Marsden Hospital in Surrey.
This year will be the 6th annual Big ‘C’ Walk Tony has organised in memory of his late wife Patricia who died of cancer. Last year £4,000 was raised, taking the total over five years to £15,600 which is split equally between the two causes.
Tony said, “I will never forget the wonderful care that Patricia received at Royal Marsden Hospital and St Wilfrid’s Hospice, so I am very grateful to everyone that takes part and all of those that sponsor them, to help these two worthy causes.
“Thank you to everyone that helped to organise the walk, especially to Ivan and Tom who walk the course three times in preparation for the big day and my hard working team.
“Thanks also to all the organisations for their tremendous support in assisting on the day, such as Eastbourne Sea Cadets, Eastbourne Council, and the police, a big thank you to everyone involved.”
The walk last year was started by Eastbourne MP Stephen Lloyd and the actress Rita Tushingham was among those who tackled the scenic eight mile walk over from Beachy Head to West Dean via Butts Brow and Jevington.
It was during his time at the Royal Marsden Hospital where his wife was being treated that Tony met Rita Tushingham, star of sixties films ‘A Taste of Honey’ and Dr Zhivago’. As a result Rita and her daughter Aisha, who had been undergoing treatment, went on to attend Big ‘C’ Walks.
The next walk will be on Sunday May 19 at 10am and fundraiser Tony is hoping as many people as possible will support the cause.
