BEGGAR WHO BROKE ASBO IS JAILED

AN Eastbourne beggar has been jailed for three months after breaching an order banning him from begging for money.

Daniel Richardson, 37, was given an Anti-Social Behaviour Order by Eastbourne magistrates in May last year under the Vagrancy Act, which banned him from begging in the town and surrounding areas.

Lewes Crown Court heard that on that date he also received a two-year conditional discharge for two begging offences and a public order offence.

But just a week later he was seen begging for cash in Hyde Gardens and was reported to police by two legal secretaries.

Prosecutor Stephen Shay said, 'On June 2 the defendant was seen in Hyde Gardens in Eastbourne when he got into conversation with a motorcyclist.

'After some polite chatter, he then courteously but nonetheless asked for money from the motorcyclist.

'The motorcyclist declined equally politely to give him any money and the defendant went off muttering.

'The incident was seen by two legal secretaries who worked at Stephen Rimmer and Co who work in Hyde Gardens.

'They have been accosted by this defendant before begging in Hyde Gardens and had particular interest in his presence this time because an article had appeared in the local newspaper saying that an ASBO had been made the previous week.

'The police duly came and arrested Mr Richardson.'

The court heard how Richardson, of no fixed abode, had turned to begging to fund his drug addiction.

Richardson was jailed for three months for breaching both orders but walked free from court after serving six months in custody on remand.

He will now be cared for at specialist psychiatric nursing home Kingswood House in St Leonards.

Judge Richard Brown told him, 'You are going to have to behave yourself otherwise you will find yourself back in prison.'
