Bar given go ahead to open later

A town centre bar has been given the green light to officially open longer.

And Hudson’s in South Street can also now allow customers to sit outside at tables until 10pm.

The go ahead was given by Eastbourne Borough Council’s planning committee on Tuesday night.

It was something of a rubberstamping exercise as Hudson’s has had a premises licence since 2007 allowing the bar to close at 1am on Fridays and Saturdays including Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve and the planning condition did not match up with the licence.

Council planners agreed permission despite objections from neighbours living nearby who were concerned at noise, late night damage to buildings and other anti social behaviour from revellers using and leaving the bar.

They include a neighbouring business and residents of flats at the rear of the bar, which is on the corner of South Street and Cornfield Lane.

To support their application, Hudson’s proprietors said their busiest times were between 11pm and 12.30am at weekends and if they could not operate between those times, the business would suffer “possibly to the point of collapse”.

A spokesperson for the proprietors said, “We have had a premises licence since 2007 allowing a closing time of 1am on certain days and dates but it has recently been discovered the planning condition does not match up with the licence and as a responsible proprietor, the current application has been submitted to regularise the situation.

“We have had no problems with the licensing, police or crime prevention authorities in the last six years of trading.”

At Tuesday night’s meeting councillors agreed to the application but stopped short of allowing the bar to open until 1am on Christmas Day morning.

Neighbours said problems with music from the property had improved.
