Arresting effort from mayor to raise cash

Mayor Mike Thompson 'arrested'

Mayor Mike Thompson 'arrested'

The Mayor of Eastbourne was arrested and thrown in the slammer for crimes against fashion.

Fortunately, the swoop by cops was only staged to promote Cllr Mike Thompson’s charity Speakeasy evening dinner dance on March 1 at the Winter Garden.

The event in aid of Cllr Thompson’s chosen charity, Lark in the Park, will have a 1920s theme and will evoke memories of an illicit prohibition nightclub, or Speakeasy.

The venue will be transformed into ‘Good Time Mike’s’ with authentic music and dinner from the period and a fantastic variety of entertainment.

Carl Greenwood and his live jazz band will be getting everyone in the mood while it will be a laugh a minute with the world class ventriloquist Steve Hewlett. There will also be a barber shop quartet, casino and themed bars.

Anyone seeking protection from the mob will be able to purchase personal insurance – with all the proceeds going to charity.

Cllr Thompson said, “I deny all the charges against me for crimes against fashion, however I would like to plead guilty to organising a fantastic night out on March 1 to raise funds for the great work carried out by Lark in the Park. I would encourage as many people as possible to dig out their fedora, trilby and cloche hats and enjoy a fabulous event.”

Tickets for the Speakeasy cost £45 with discounts for tables of 10. To book call the Mayor’s Office on 415020 or email mayorsoffice@eastbourne.gov.uk

Lark in the Park is an Eastbourne based Charitable Trust for local youngsters with special needs. The group works with ages five to 25 and the disabilities include Downs Syndrome, Autism and Cerebral Palsy. Lark in the Park provides holiday breaks for the youngsters as well as an annual Christmas Party. In his mayoral year, Cllr Thompson has so far raised £5,000.
