Application made for larger skate park in Hailsham

AMBITIOUS new plans to build a skate park for youth in Hailsham have been ramped up by the town authority.

Hailsham Town Council has applied to construct a new reinforced concrete skatepark with an access path, street furniture, fencing and landscaping in the south west corner of Maurice Thornton Playing Field in Vega Close, Hailsham.

The paper has highlighted concerns of young skaters who lamented a lack of skate park facilities in the town.

A first draft plan was approved for the site in October 2010. But the new application boldly asks for a larger skate park at the location.

If the new application is approved by Wealden District Council, the skate park will be named after Tony Tack, the former chairman of Town Farm Residents Association (TFRA).

Sports-mad Mr Tack, a Christian called ‘Mr Motivator’ by his son Steve, was a respected youth rights champion who campaigned to get better facilities for children, such as a play park at Maurice Thornton costing £100,000. He sadly died in March 2010.

A planning statement said, “It is the aim of TFRA in conjunction with Hailsham Town Council to provide a popular multi use skateboard park primarily for local residents that will appeal to a wider range of skaters, scooter and BMX users.”

The facility, with a total size of 1,335 sqm, would be made of sprayed concrete put into the ground with a grassed earth bunding.

The statement added, “It is expected that once the skatepark has been constructed it will not only provide a popular facility for local residents but also for participants from outside the immediate area. The facility will be free to use and as it won’t be fenced off, it will be open to the public seven days a week.”

There will be no floodlighting as the council hopes skaters will use the site in daylight hours. The district council will review the plans.

Is it me or has there been a rash of skatepark proposals recently? What's the motive? Taking kiddies minds off the prospect of student loan and certain unemployment perhaps?

'Kids these days' eh? What unfair, sweeping generalisations you make Vera. I think this is a great idea and will give the kids somewhere to hang out and have fun.

Ah well, at least they can't burn concrete. And if it's unlit at night they can gather to do all those things that kids these days seem to have to do. Just hope a commitee is appointed to clean up the litter, butts, cans, broken glass, syringes etc. that will gather.
