Appeal after starved pony found dying

The RSPCA is appealing for information after a starving pony found collapsed in a field had to be put to sleep.

The RSPCA, the fire service and a vet worked tirelessly to rescue the stricken animal which was found in a terrible condition last week in a field off Mill Road in Hailsham.

The young horse, which was found last Thursday (January 31), was rescued but had to be put to sleep.

RSPCA inspector Zoe Ballard, who took part in the rescue, said, “This was a sad and tragic incident.

“The poor horse was a in a real state. It is unacceptable that someone would allow their animal to get into this condition without seeking help.”

The pony, thought to be a young Piebald colt, less than a year old and around 12 hands, was found collapsed on the ground, emaciated and unable to stand unaided. Thanks to the efforts of the RSPCA and the local fire service, the horse was rescued from the field but sadly had to be put to sleep shortly afterwards on veterinary advice.

During the past three years there has been several reports of horses being brutally attacked in Sussex.

A Facebook page was set up to offer support and other services for riders in the county following the deliberate killing of a horse in Alfriston back in 2010. Rascal, an 18-month-old Lagdon Cob, was found dead in a field in the village and a post mortem showed he had died of multiple injuries which were thought to have been inflicted by a sharp object.

In October last year a 17-month-old pony was murdered in a sexual attack at a sanctuary in Polegate. The distraught owners of Bunnie discovered her mutilated body in a field at the Little Bramble Farm Horse Sanctuary in Sayerlands Lane, Polegate.

Anyone with information about the latest incident is urged to contact the RSPCA inspectorate appeal line on 0300 123 8018. Calls will be treated in confidence.
