Another plan for a mobile phone mast

PROPOSALS have been put forward for another mobile phone mast in Seaford.

Vodafone wants to put up a 10-metre telegraph pole at the junction of Sutton Avenue and Eastbourne Road and has applied to Lewes District Council for permission.

The site is only a short distance from where Vodafone wanted to put a similar mast on the Sutton Corner junction but abandoned it after residents' protests. The controversial plans also come as a similar application by the mobile phone giant in another part of the town was recently objected to by Seaford Town Council.

The prior application for land adjacent to St Peter's Church in Belgrave Road was slammed as 'outrageous' by Seaford Town Councillor Laurie Holland.

Members of the town council's planning and highways committee objected to the plan on the grounds of street clutter, danger to pedestrians and unneighbourly.

Lewes District Council will make a decision on whether to approve or reject the latest plan at a later date.

Vodafone, which already has permission for a mast in Beacon Drive, said the latest mast was needed to improve broadband reception for phones using its 3G network.

But Councillor Roy Bennett said there was no need for 3G masts in the town and that many people in Seaford had mobile phones for convenience and emergencies. He added, "We are going to get more and more masts put up but I don't think the demand is there.

"Seaford has quite an elderly population and it will be years before it has a population which uses this sort of technology."

A spokesman for Vodafone said, "This site was chosen as it provides a backdrop of street furniture and trees so that the proposed timber telegraph pole supporting structure will not be visually intrusive.

"The current proposed location has the support of the local planning authority officer."
