Another airing for Seahaven FM?

AS SEAHAVEN FM gears up for another potential broadcast next month one presenter is keen to get more of the town's youth involved.

The station, which has received positive feedback from residents, is hoping to go on air for another 28-day broadcast near the end of November.

The community radio station was set up following the hard work and dedication of a group of men. Nick Mallinson's dream of bringing news, music, and programmes to the airways gained interest following a discussion with three other businessmen at Seaford and Newhaven's Chamber of Commerce breakfast meeting.

Since February this year it has had two successful broadcasts and has also been on the Internet for around 16 hours a day at www.seahavenfm.com

Seahaven FM is also hoping to secure a full time community radio licence and is in the process of completing the necessary documentation.

Joel Stewart, who has a Saturday slot between 1-2pm, said, "I read in the newspaper about Nick wanting to start the radio station and went to the public meeting. I thought it was about time something like this happened and liked the community aspect of it.

"The other reason I decided to get involved was that I have only been in Seaford for around three years and for me it was one way of getting more involved in the community."

The Sussex Downs College lecturer's programme focuses on youth and has included features on someone who has restricted growth syndrome and Newlands pupil Katie Champion who made it through to the regional finals of UK Idol 2008.

The Seaford resident also has a '15 Minutes of Fame' slot where young people can promote various issues or events.

He added, "Ideally in the future it would be nice for a young person to take over my slot. Youngsters do many positive things which are not always highlighted – that's why I am doing the show – it's from a youth perspective.

"I'm particularly keen to get more teenagers involved and have their items played on air. It could be basic as someone wanting to announce a gig that they are part of or it could be something they have created.

"It would be so nice to get a full time licence. We have had some brilliant support from people. This neck of the woods definitely needs a community radio station that is genuinely local."

Mr Mallinson said, "We have been on air now on the Internet for nine months and have had two FM broadcasts. We have a strong team of presenters and look forward to building on this. "We look forward to hopefully being on FM permanently."
