‘Anonymous’ art auction raising funds for hospice

AN ART auction which will raise cash for a local charity has attracted more big names after Tracey Emin and David Hockney donated pieces.
St Wilfrid’s Hospice appealed for as many people as possible to send in a postcard-sized painting, drawing or sketch in order for them first be exhibited at the Towner and then sold off online to generate some much-needed funds.
The Eastbourne-based charity has begun work on a new centre on Kings Drive which it believes will help transform the way end of life care is provided locally.
Once finished the new HQ will have double the bed space for inpatients as well as day therapy facilities, a sculptured garden and a coffee shop and other services open to the general public.
The response to its appeal has been hugely encouraging, with UK Prime Minister David Cameron and a host of international tennis stars sending work in as well as the renowned, award-winning artists Emin and Hockney.
But, anyone hoping on picking up a bargain must be warned – the pieces are kept anonymous until after they have been won.
This means that you could end up with a sought-after painting without realising it, or a drawing by someone completely unknown.
Earlier this week St Wilfrid’s received more donated works from some well-respected artists, among them Eastbourne’s own Elda Abramson.
She has worked closely with the Arts Council over recent years and was delighted to help out such a deserving local cause.
Speaking to the Gazette she said, “Hospice care has made such a difference to many people close to me.
“We now need to ensure that there’s enough beds for everyone who may need the support provided by St Wilfrid’s.
“It’s also particularly important to raise awareness and educate others in the caring profession, as well as individuals who wish to care for their loved ones, on palliative care and how a hospice can help support them. I’m so pleased to be able to support St Wilfrid’s and this great initiative.”
Others to have handed in their work include Julian Sutherland-Beatson, 2011 and 2102 Artist in Residence at Glyndebourne, Barry Wilson 2011 Saatchi Winner, Timothy Hyman numerous exhibitions of his work including the National Portrait Gallery and the Royal Academy, and elected to the Royal Academy, and Irene Runayker.
The hospice now has enough paintings (with more than 500 having been sent in) so attention is moving toward the exhibition, which will take place between October 13 and 20 at the award-winning local gallery.
After that each piece will be put up for sale on auction website www.ebay.co.uk
