An ambulance looks set to be off the road for some time after being involved in a freak accident last week.

The St John Ambulance 4x4 response vehicle suffered severe damage when cladding from a house nearby fell off the wall and onto the ambulance in Bourne Street on Tuesday night.

The St John Ambulance headquarters in Eastbourne is based in Bourne Street on the corner of New Road and was parked outside when the cladding on the side of the house next door crumbled off and fell.

Ambulance chiefs say the damage will be assessed but there is a possibility it will be too severe to be repaired.

A spokesperson said, “This is the loss of a specialised vehicle which potentially can, and is, called upon to operate anywhere within our local area of Eastbourne or further afield

“This particular vehicle is a fully equipped ambulance and has been used to provide first aid cover for events in Eastbourne for many years. It is used where events are held off road such as cross country athletics. It also acts as a second vehicle for many events held in Eastbourne such as Extreme and the Beachy Head Marathon.

“In adverse weather it has been used in the county to transport community nurses to their patients. This week it has been used in assisting Kent ambulances to reach casualties in places conventional ambulances would have difficulty accessing.”
