Alfriston Dickensian fun on Saturday
Visitors to Alfriston tomorrow (Saturday) can enjoy its annual Dickensian event and snap up lots of Christmas goods.
The fun festive occasion, which is taking place slightly earlier than usual this year, begins at 2pm and as well as the chance to meet Father Christmas in his Grotto, shoppers can browse and buy goods at many of the stores which will be open until late.
Among the entertainment will be morris dancing in the village square as the event unfolds at 2pm and later on there will be carol singing from Alfriston School pupils as well as a short play with a Dickensian theme performed by Seaford Youth Drama Group.
Visitors are welcome to follow many of the traders and residents and dress up in Dickensian style costume.
Frankie Reynolds, secretary of the committee which organises the event, said, “We see it as a real community event.
“It’s dark and cold outside and we’re trying to lift people’s spirits.
“It’s all about coming together with music and dance.
“If it’s a reasonable day we’re hoping for thousands of people.
“We’re hoping for dry weather.”
The Hailsham Bonfire Society will lead a procession shortly before 5pm which will culminate in Father Christmas turning the lights on the tree in the village square.
Other highlights of the event, which runs until 9pm, will include entertainment from Eastbourne Scottish Pipe Band at both 5.30pm and 7pm in the village square, and the Salvation Army Band can be seen at the same venue at 6pm when it plays carols. The Expedient Jazz Band will also be making appearances during the event.
The roads into Alfriston will be closed from 3pm to 9pm and there will be a frequent park and ride shuttle service from Drusillas car park – where there is free parking – into the village. The cost of the return trip on the bus is £2.
