Ale and hearty at beer festival

Thousands of beer guzzling revellers flocked to the Winter Garden at the weekend for a taste of some of the best real ales and wines currently on offer.
An estimated 4,300 people attended the tenth annual Eastbourne Beer Festival, with the Friday night sessions selling out long in advance. On tap over the course of the three day event were more than 150 cask ales, many with quirky names, including Wolf’s Granny Wouldn’t Like It, Triple FF’s tipple Pressed Rat and Warthog and Purple Moose’s Dark Side of the Moose.
The most local of the brews came from the nearby Beach Head Brewery, which sold its ever-popular Legless Rambler, and Longman, which stocked five beers, including its Long Blond offering.
All of the ales were handpicked by local CAMRA members and a tasting guide was available to anyone trying real ale for the first time.
A cider bar proved particularly popular, as did an international bottled beer bar selling brews from all four corners of the world.
Live music and traditional pub games kept the revellers entertained and for anyone who fancied something more sophisticated, there was enough win to fill the Channel.
The beer festival was held to help raise some much-needed cash for four local charities: the Tuesday O’Hara Fund, East Sussex Foster Carers, East Sussex Cruse Bereavement counselling and the JPK Sussex project. For more photographs and to find out how much was raised, see Friday’s Herald.
