Air Ambulance safe to fly despite helicopter groundings

THE AIR ambulance which serves Eastbourne is fit to fly, despite others in the country being grounded due to safety fears.

Half of the UK’s air ambulance fleet of 32 helicopters were out of action this week but Sussex, Kent and Surrey Air Ambulance has confirmed its craft is safe to fly.

The main operator, Bond Air Services, withdrew all of its Eurocopter EC 135 helicopters over concerns about possible cracks in the rotor hub.

A spokesperson from Sussex, Kent and Surrey Air Ambulance said, “Our model is a MD902 Explorer, not the Eurocopter which has had all the problems.

“And we won’t be drafted in to the affected counties to help them out either as there are other back up aircraft available to them.”
