Thousands of pounds have been raised for a charity set up when a young Eastbourne man died suddenly while travelling the world.

Friends of Adam Savory and his sister Emma took part in the Eastbourne Half Marathon on Sunday to raise cash for Para Monte, the charity set up by his family to make people aware of the dangerous of altitude sickness.

They were cheered on by Adam’s parents Chris and Jeannet from Derwent Road who said they were grateful for the runners’ efforts.

Adam died suddenly from altitude sickness during the trip of a lifetime. He was just over a month into a journey around north and south America when tragedy struck in September last year.

The former Ratton School and Park College student had travelled with friend Bryn Harbourne to the ancient Inca city of Cusco in south eastern Peru, more than 3,000 metres above sea level, but became unwell and died within days.

Adam’s parents Chris and Jeannet and sister Emma want to make people who have a gap year, or any person going travelling, to be aware of the dangers of altitude sickness and that is why they set up the charity.

Chris said, “The charity is the way we can best preserve Adam’s memory. We can help warn people of the dangers of altitude sickness and help prevent any further unnecessary loss of life.”

Altitude sickness is also known as acute mountain sickness and is a pathological effect of high altitude on humans, caused by acute exposure to low partial pressure of oxygen at high altitude.

It commonly occurs above 8,000 feet and symptoms are said to be similar to flu.
