£5,000 worth of cameras stolen from Halisham shop

BURGLARS raided a town centre shop and stole £5,000 worth of top-of-the-range cameras.

The Camera Centre, in the High Street, was broken into on Wednesday night, around 10.40pm, a police spokesperson said.

Owner Robert Girling said the burglars got in through the back of the shop.

They then cleared the front display, taking 17 cameras, including digital single lens reflex (SLR) and compact cameras.

Mr Girling said, "There was no visible problem with the shop from the front because they cut a hole out of the wall at the back.

"They emptied the cameras off the shelves at the front. We're talking about 17 cameras, with a total retail value of about 5,000."

Mr Girling, 60. who has owned the business for more than 40 years, admitted the burglary had come as 'a blow' as it would take time to replenish his shop's stock.

But he said the cameras taken by the thieves did not have their chargers or leads with them.

He said, "If anyone is offered a camera without a charger or a lead then it could well be one of ours."

Mr Girling added that security at the shop had been beefed-up since the burglary.

It is the latest of a series of break-ins in the town centre, following thefts in St. Mary's Walk over Christmas and the Quintins Centre in January.

Police are appealing for witnesses. Anyone with information on the Camera Centre burglary is urged to contact PC Robert Fenner on 0845 60 70 999, quoting serial 1806 of February 24.
