£4,500 boost for boxing club

THE WILLINGDON Trees Amateur Boxing Club is packing a punch thanks to a cash boost of £4,500.

The Eastbourne Crime Reduction Partnership has handed over the cash which has helped buy a ring and protective equipment.

The club, which meets at the Parkfield Pub in Hampden Park, was planned and developed by PC Dave Selby and Dan Woolridge from Willingdon Trees Community Centre with a number of goals in mind.

They looked at ways to tackle antisocial issues within the community and givepeople a safe activity in the evenings where they could meet new people, learn new skills and keep fit and instil the sense of discipline, respect and self-control which is vital in boxing.

Sergeant Keith Wells, who is involved with the club and secured the funding, said, "This 4,500 will make a significant difference to the all the members. It is good to see that this money is being spent in the community to support local initiatives and local people."

Bob Gough, from the Eastbourne Crime Reduction Partnership, said, "The Crime Reduction Partnership supports many activities from enforcement through to diversion activities to make Eastbourne even safer. It is important to invest in our young people in the town and this initiative does just that, encouraging self discipline, fitness and respect."

Dan Woolridge said, "We are very grateful for the support Sussex Police and Eastbourne Borough Council continues to give us. Our club has enjoyed great success during its first year and the Parkfield has been very supportive.

"I've really enjoyed running the club with Dave because you get the chance to see people make positive changes in their health and attitudes and then continue to develop week by week.

"We are all very committed to the club and are now looking to it's long term sustainability. We plan to raise funds to extend the Willingdon Trees Community Centre and provide a custom built training gym. I have recently sent off several grant bids for the initial stages, but we will be looking for further grant and business funding for its completion."

The club meets on Monday nights with juniors from 6pm to 7.15pm and seniors between 7.30pm to 8.45pm.
