£2.8m court award for car crash victim
A SEAFORD man who suffered catastrophic injuries when he was hit by a car has been awarded £2.8 million for his future care.
Marc Cole was 16 and studying a motor mechanic course when he was struck by a car on the outskirts of Newhaven on November 10, 2003.
Marc, now 21, who lives with his father, Graham, in Vale Road, suffered devastating head injuries and an acquired brain injury, which have left him in need of substantial care and support.
He has also suffered emotional and psychological damage from his injuries which forced doctors to remove part of the frontal lobe of his brain.
Through his devoted father and the help of solicitors, Marc sued the driver of the car that hit him, whose motor insurers last week agreed to a 2.8 million settlement of Marc's claim, without making any admission of liability.
Following the hearing at London's High Court Marc's solicitor, Francis Lacy Scott, said that the vast majority of the 2.8 million settlement would be used to fund the enormous costs of a lifetime's care.
He added, "We are exceptionally pleased with the outcome. This gives Marc financial security for the rest of his life.
"All the money will be devoted to providing for his care and to support him for the rest of his life."
Marc's father Graham, who gave up his job to become a full-time carer for his son following the accident, said, "I would say to anyone in this situation to go to the right people for the job, a good solicitor that deals in brain injury.
"ASB Law was brilliant to us and without them I don't know where we would be now, we would be struggling.
"We are more than pleased with the outcome, it was more than we expected.
"It has been very hard, I don't think people can understand what it is like to live with someone with an acquired brain injury.
"Our biggest concern was what would happen once we had gone. This is a huge relief."
Marc has been living with his dad in Seaford for the past two years while his mother Paula has lived in Newhaven with their other children.
Graham and Paula are hoping to live together again in the future once Marc decides where he wants to live so they can go back to being his parents, rather than his carers.
The money awarded to Marc is under the court's protection and will be used for his future needs.
