£12m improvement work to go ahead at schools

IMPROVEMENT works will be carried out at two Seaford schools after a £12million refurbishment scheme was given the go-ahead by the government.

The project includes rebuilding and refurbishing several schools in East Sussex, which include Chyngton School and Cradle Hill School.

The schools have been identified by East Sussex County Council to benefit from the first two years of the government's new modernisation funding programme for primary schools.

At Chyngton School approximately 1.8m will be spent on substantial improvements including replacing temporary buildings with a new purpose-built classroom block, extended hall and improved special educational needs facilities.

A similar amount will pay for an imaginative scheme at Cradle Hill School linking two separate parts of the main school building, replacing buildings and improving accessibility.

For these schemes the plan is for work to start in the summer.

Councillor David Elkin, the county council's Lead Member for Learning and School Effectiveness, said, "For sometime there has been uncertainty over what Government funding there would be for primary school improvements.

"A lot of work has gone into preparing these projects and we're obviously delighted we have finally got government backing for some of the improvement work we want to carry out.

"The fact that work can now begin in earnest is very good news for these schools and their local communities.

"While we have the green light for the first two years' projects there is still a degree of uncertainty over the following years.

"We hope we'll hear confirmation from the government soon about years three and four and longer term funding arrangements."
