100 years since boy's sea rescue
THE family of a woman who rescued a drowning boy from the waters of Eastbourne 100 years ago has paid tribute to her quick-thinking.
In August 18 1908, Christine Walford, who married twice Mayor of Worthing Charles Green, was visiting the town for a day.
While relaxing on the beach close to the bandstand she saw a 10-year-old boy fall into the sea from the breakwater. The boy was having difficulty staying afloat and could not swim.
Christine went in to the sea and brought the boy back to dry land, saving his life, and was presented with a Royal Humane Society certificate.
This summer, on August 16 , 21 members of Christine's family met on the beach during Airbourne to celebrate 100 years since the rescue.
The party was organised by Jane Steen, 64, of Meads, one of Christine's grandchildren, and her husband Mike.
Jane said everyone had an enjoyable day reminiscing and a bottle of champagne was cracked open to 'thank granny'.
Those present included two of her daughters-in-law, five of her grandchildren, six of her great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren, and three of the party had travelled from Australia where they now reside.
At the time of the incident Christine lived in London and moved to Worthing in the 1930s. Jane said her grandmother carried out a lot of work for the community.
