1,000 sign up against parking scheme
MORE than 1,000 residents have put their names to a petition calling for the controversial pay to park scheme to be dropped.
Liberal Democrats in Eastbourne, who are vehemently opposed to motorists being charged to park in the town centre and along the seafront, say residents have been snapping up their postcard petition.
Stephen Lloyd, the Lib Dem's parliamentary candidate, said, "It's clear that the vast majority of people in Eastbourne still support our battle against the county council.
"I've already received more than a thousand responses saying a very clear No to Pay to Park, with more petitions coming in each day.
"East Sussex County Council is still trying to railroad its expensive and unwanted scheme on to the people of Eastbourne and now wasting more taxpayers' money by undertaking yet another consultation.
"We will pass all our petitions to the county council, but I would urge all those people who wrote to me to also send their objections to the county council, Ref D3-MV, FREEPOST, LW43, Lewes, East Sussex BN7 1BR. Even at this late stage I still hold out hope that County Hall will see sense.
"The longer they persist the harder it is becoming for local residents and businesses in Eastbourne. Why is it that PCSOs are able to ticket illegally parked cars in Bexhill and around Hastings but not in Eastbourne?
"I hold up my hand to the fact that, like most people in Eastbourne, on occasions I've parked illegally but I would be more than happy to support PCSOs doing a regular blitz on illegal parking and would welcome an opportunity to pay a fine.
"We do not want the Pay to Park scheme imposed on Eastbourne. It's already cost local people 1million and if it does go ahead, will cost us all at least 2million per year.
"If the consequences of what has happened to independent traders in Lewes and Rother is anything to go by, once a scheme like this is introduced business drops off sharply, the zones spread and year on year the charges go up."
