Linda's in the wings for solo

THE BRILLIANT verse of newly appointed Poet Laureate, Carol Ann Duffy, will be performed by Linda Marlowe in the acclaimed show The World's Wife at the Devonshire Park Theatre on July 2 as part of the 2009 Solo Season, prior to this years' Edinburgh fringe festival.

It was announced this week that Carol Ann Duffy is to be the new Poet Laureate, the first time a female poet has ever been commissioned.

Previous Poet Laureates have included Ted Hughes, Sir John Betjeman, William Wordsworth and Alfred Lord Tennyson.

The World's Wife is a stage version of Duffy's acclaimed poems, which imagine the perspectives of the wives of famous men through the ages, whilst casting an astute glance over the modern world.

Subversive, inventive and very funny, the verse cuts through boundaries between factual and fictional women to get under the skin of the women 'behind' great men, from Mrs. Faust and Frau Freud to Queen Kong and Mrs. Midas.

Carol Ann Duffy is a multi-award winning poet, playwright and freelance writer. Her work has the rare virtue of both being both literary and accessible and as a result is read and enjoyed by a huge numbers of the public whilst featuring regularly on university and school syllabuses and being critically and academically acclaimed.

She is one of Britain's most loved and successful contemporary writers.

Linda Marlowe has enjoyed widespread acclaim for her previous solo work including the award winning Berkoff's Women, which toured internationally and played West End seasons.

In this new show, her virtuoso performance style is potently combined with Duffy's dark humour and acerbic wit.

• The performance is at 7.45pm and tickets cost 12.50, call 412000.
