Lighter evenings would create jobs - says Eastbourne’s MP
MOVING the clocks forward one hour could create Eastbourne jobs, claims the town’s MP Stephen Lloyd.
The MP is backing a bill to objectively look at the benefits of a the change .
He was due to be in the House of Commons today (Friday) to speak in support of the Daylight Saving Bill when it receives its Third Reading.
The Bill calls on the Government to conduct a comprehensive review of the costs and benefits of putting clocks forward an hour throughout the UK, resulting in lighter evenings every day of the year.
Mr Lloyd said, “The arguments in favour of clock change are compelling.
“This one simple low-cost policy could bring wide ranging benefits to the UK, and particularly a seaside town like Eastbourne by creating much-needed jobs in the tourism sector and give our town another really positive boost.”
Supporters argue that lighter evenings would save lives on our roads by making more of our busiest evening rush hours occur in daylight, create jobs by boosting the tourism sector, and make many – especially older people – feel safer going out in the evenings for longer.
Lighter Later, the group coordinating the campaign for change, says support for the cause has never been stronger.
Daniel Vockins, campaign manager, said, “The Daylight Saving Bill is supported by more than 90 national organisations from The AA to SAGA and The FA backing lighter evenings.
“On the year the Olympics comes to Britain, this would be a brilliant legacy for our young athletes.”

Saturday, January 28, 2012 at 12:33 PMMy understanding is that this change was made originally to avoid accidents in the morning during the school run when people are more sleepy. if my understanding is correct, why ignore that hazzard?

Saturday, January 21, 2012 at 10:15 AMThis is the most ridiculous bill I've ever heard of, it's barmy. Stephen, stop backing such ill-considered nonsense and try and salvage some of the respect you've lost from me and doubtless many others over the last 6 months. Bewilderingly bonkers this.

Friday, January 20, 2012 at 10:27 PMI think there is more chance of Bill Gates from microsoft filing for personal Bankruptcy than an hours daylight springing the jobs market back to life!
