Towner should help local talent

Being an appreciator of the arts, I know and speak to a good number of highly talented and skilled artists in Eastbourne and the surrounding area.

With the new Towner Art Gallery I thought it only fair to bring to the attention the plight of our own local artists. With eight million pounds, a lot of money by any standards, it appears that very little if any actually filters down to support or promote our own local artists. I find it utterly unacceptable that artists as far a field as South America and other parts of the globe are to be given pride and place in the new gallery and yet it seems not a single local artist is represented.

There are a number of highly talented local and indeed English artists, and one assumes that the Towner personnel has researched them, and if so have they chosen to ignore them, preferring to show the artistic works of international people who have no association with Eastbourne.

It seems that many of our local artists struggle to even be heard or seen under a blanket of indifference from those who could and should champion them, after all part ratepayers money helps support the Towner, should not residents benefit from this hidden well of local talent?

We know that the vast majority of money has come as lottery grants, surely we need channel some funding to encourage/support local artists. This is not to slight international art, far from it, but at the expense of local art, come on Towner, be fair with public funds let us see you promoting our own talented artists give them the same opportunities that you are giving the international artists.
