Teachers in the right

As a former Park College student I completely support the strike action taken by teachers belonging to the NUT at the college.

The teachers decided to take industrial action not to demand more pay but to protest against management's decision to recruit new teachers on contracts with worse terms and conditions. When I was at Park College it always had a strong sense of community and their teachers are to be commended for taking action to support the position of new teachers at the college.

The Sussex Downs College merger with Park College means that parents and students now have less choice than when I was an A level student.

It also seems that the management at Sussex Downs College are misleading the Eastbourne public as they continue to market Park College as a sixth form college but are unwilling to adhere to nationally agreed sixth form teachers pay and conditions.

With the lack of choice in post 16 education in Eastbourne it is vital that Park College continues to attract and retain staff by paying them the national rate.

Creating badly paid and de-motivated staff does not put students first, but does undermine the long standing trust and partnership with local schools, parents and the community.

Support the Park College teachers.
