Store not opening

Shortly after the Somerfield food store in Hampden Park closed down, it was acquired by the German supermarket, Aldi.

Because my wife and I were regular customers of Somerfield, and of its predecessor, Kwik Save, we had hoped that Aldi would re-open it as soon as suitable improvements had been carried out.

As we were missing the convenience of the former Somerfield store, I telephoned Aldi HQ from time to time, enquiring as to when it would be opening.

To my joy, earlier this year I was advised that it would actually open in June this year! As it was very evident that considerable work was being carried out on the premises, we accepted this news in good faith.

Sadly, it is not to be. Not only has work ceased completely, but the original application by Aldi has been withdrawn!

Having spoken with a borough council planning officer about it, I have established that a new application has not yet been forthcoming.

Apparently, Aldi are insisting on being given permission for access into the site from Brassey Avenue, adjacent to the level crossing, and have decided not to proceed, unless such access is forthcoming.
