Parking charge perils

It is perhaps reasonable for the Chamber of Commerce to want to see a 'pay-to-park' scheme within an area marked by, say, the station, the Town Hall, the war memorial and TJ Hughes, in order to keep easy access for shoppers.

However, if it expects drivers, in the current economic climate, to pay to park beyond that small central area then the Chamber of Commerce will get what it deserves: a town where visitors do not linger, where workers go straight home at the end of the day (having already paid to spend eight hours in the office), where restaurants, theatres, hotels and bars are struggling, and where few people feel entirely safe walking on an abandoned sea front.

We can only hope that the Liberal Democrats remember their manifesto promises on the parking issue. The Chamber of Commerce is not the sole constituent of Eastbourne.
