Now that’s not what I call service
READING your article about all the shops in Eastbourne that are closing down, I feel I had to write to you concerning another chain not mentioned in your article, HMV.
Just after New Year I was up in London and went into their Oxford Street store. I saw that there was a collection of boxed sets of CDs of the entire British Hit Parade of 1961, being released the following Monday.
As I did not want to go up there again making another train fare, I decided to go into the HMV store in the Arndale Centre and order it from them, as they don’t stock everything like London does.
I was absolutely amazed when they refused to order it for me, saying they were not taking any more orders as they had ordered stuff that had not come in.
The following day I phoned an independent trader in Bexhill, and he had the CDs come in within 48 hours, and in the case of a DVD I ordered from him it came in the next day. That’s what I call service and he was so obliging.
While I do not wish to see any more major stores closing down and jobs lost, if it should happen to HMV then maybe they will only have themselves to blame.
