Linda gave great talk to Friends
How fortunate the Friends of the Towner were to be re-visited by Linda Smith who again gave one of her excellent art talks last Tuesday.
But, should those attending have expected to sit in comfortable surroundings then they would have been gravely disappointed.
Once again the Friends have been treated like third class citizens both by the Gallery officials and EBC despite the writer of this letter having received personal assurances both verbally and in writing from David Tutt that "there would be no problem with the ground floor of the gallery being used for talks."
It now seems that a maximum of 70 people – barely 10 per cent of the membership – will be herded together into an area described as The Junction Box (a fitting name) where the uncomfortable chairs are so closely lined up that only limited leg room is possible; where there is only one gangway – which I would have thought is against fire regulations – and where both sets of doors have to be firmly closed in order that a darkened room is created to enable photographs/slides to be screened.
Viewing is not particularly good and the claustrophobic atmosphere produced could hardly have been appreciated by anyone, as evidenced by the complaints made.
The Friends of the Towner have contributed over 120,000 to both the previous Towner and the current gallery and this is the thanks that it gets.
It is quite disgraceful and they have been totally let down by all concerned.
I trust that every member of the Friends and visitors who read this letter will write direct to David Tutt at the EBC to express their disgust at what is now happening and demand an immediate change of attitude.
The current situation cannot be tolerated and change must be immediate.
