LETTER: So many shops have vanished

I must thank Mr Clewett [letters, January 29] for spending the time to read my letter about supermarkets. Although I have an Eastbourne postcode, I actually abide in Langney. I have resided in Pevensey Bay, Westham and here since 1952. I have watched so many village shops (butchers, bakers, grocers and candlestick-makers) disappear in those 60-odd years, especially in Polegate, to be replaced by supermarkets, pound shops and charity shops '“ sadly Terminus Road in Eastbourne is a prime example. More and more supermarkets for 'convenience', less and less support for 'local' shops. And who allowed this to happen? Town councils, with little or no support for the local shop-keeping community.

On a slightly more familiar note, one wonders who allowed that monstrous block of flats to be built on Eastbourne seafront, near the beautiful Hydro Hotel? Even uglier, if possible, than the average seven supermarkets. Roll on the revolution, and I’m off to the pub. Carefully, if possible, avoiding the green fields reserved for even more supermarkets!
