LETTER: Not eccentric '“ colourful

I was a bit surprised by the article in last week's edition relating to the TV programme concerning Sheikh Abid Gulzar and his purchase of Eastbourne Pier.

The reason for my surprise was the referral to Mr Gulzar as “eccentric”. I thought this was quite an unfair description of somebody who supports the town so generously. He is in my opinion simply a colourful character and one who stands out from the usual monochrome residents in this town, including myself.

Every time I see his gold car it brings a smile to my face. I think we should be grateful that the Sheikh is so fond of Eastbourne and prepared to spend his wealth here. I fail to understand why some people are so critical of him. I am sure that however he chooses to show off the pier it will be done with our best interests at heart.
