LETTER: Dicing with death in street

I have lived on the corner of Compton Street and Carlisle Road next to The Heritage Centre for nine years now. It has always been a busy area with the theatres, pub and a small parade of shops leading up from the seafront. But so far this year, bearing in mind we have not even hit the busiest time of the year, Compton Street has become a complete deathtrap for those wishing to get from one side of the road to the other. From Trinity Place down to the back of The Grand Hotel it has become something of a '˜rat run' where cars are going up and down at such speeds it is only a matter of time before someone gets killed.

Elderly people, students and parents with young children walk up Carlisle Road from the seafront to The Heritage Centre and to the town. Not only do they have to dice with death with a bus stop obscuring their vision, but also HGVs unloading outside the stage door, parked cars, buses, dustmen etc.

Some are unable to walk quickly and are on walking sticks, mothers with young children in prams and tourists who are trying to make there way to the town and are always lost or confused as to which way to go. Motorists are driving like complete maniacs – if someone stepped out they would never be able to stop and the noise from the motorbikes is unbearable.

If there was ever one place needing a pedestrian crossing it would be here before it’s too late and someone gets killed. Something needs to be done soon to calm the traffic down!
