Hunt is on for sporting memories

IN conjunction with the Eastbourne Herald and Chelsea College, the Eastbourne Society is preparing an exhibition at the Heritage Centre in Carlisle Road of Eastbourne’s sports achievers to coincide with the Olympic Games and to run thereafter to the end of the year.

We have had a lot of help from all the major sports but we would still like to hear from the likes of judo and other perhaps some of the less known sports about your successes.

We are desperately in search of photographs of children’s sports whatever they may be as we regard these as our future Olympians. Anything borrowed will, of course, be returned.

We are also going to show a special section entitled Did You Know? This covers a multitude of sins to include:

l The Golf Match from the Downs GC to the 8 Bells at Jevington.

l The nude men’s diving club off the end of the pier.

l The Aboriginal cricket team playing at the Saffrons who taught local players how to throw boomerangs after the match.

l The first ever radio Darts commentary took place in Eastbourne.

l The Eastbourne single sculler who held the world record for a race from Dover to Calais.

If you know of any similar such interesting tit bits, please let us know. And finally, we are looking for a cartoonist to illustrate some of these unusual events. Don’t be shy please contact us.

Our contact information is as follows:

Services@eastbourneheritagecentre.co.uk or The Heritage Centre, 2 Carlisle Road Eastbourne BN21 4BT, or myself Owen Boydell on 01323 721825

OWEN BOYDELL,

Heritage Centre, Carlisle Road.
